Lyrics are quite important when it comes to music and I just thought they deserved their own thread. One of my favourites is Boss' No Surrender, especially 'We learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school'. So beautiful and true. Another one is 'We thought that we had the answers, it was the questions we had wrong' from 11 O'Clock Tick Tock by U2. I think this quote is in all of my notebooks! Any ideas?

Very cool idea for a thread! I like those you posted. Very true indeed. The first one reminds me of a Paul Simon one I like a lot..."When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school, it's a wonder I can think at all!" (Kodachrone) He's had so many great lyrics, one of my favorite songwriters. Another one I like a lot from him (with Garfunkel) is from Flowers Never Bend with the Rainfall. The whole song is filled with great lines. I think it's brilliant. I can't really pick a favorite line so here's the whole thing. 'Through the corridors of sleep Past the shadows dark and deep My mind dances and leaps in confusion. I don't know what is real, I can't touch what I feel And I hide behind the shield of my illusion. and so I'll continue to continue to pretend that my life will never end, and flowers never bend with the rainfall. ~ chorus The mirror on my wall casts an image dark and small but I'm not sure at all it's my reflection. I am blinded by the light of God and truth and right, and I wander in the night without direction... chorus No matter if you're born to play the king or pawn the line is thinly drawn tween joy and sorrow, so my fantasy becomes reality and I must be what I must be and face tomorrow.' chorus

For me, one of the best is Alanis's Everything, highlighted is my fav part:
I can be an asshole of the grandest kind I can withhold like it's going out of style I can be the moodiest baby and you've never met anyone Who is as negative as I am sometimes
I am the wisest woman you've ever met. I am the kindest soul with whom you've connected. I have the bravest heart that you've ever seen And you've never met anyone Who's as positive as I am sometimes.
You see everything, you see every part You see all my light and you love my dark You dig everything of which I'm ashamed There's not anything to which you can't relate And you're still here
I blame everyone else, not my own partaking My passive-aggressiveness can be devastating I'm terrified and mistrusting And you've never met anyone as, As closed down as I am sometimes.
You see everything, you see every part You see all my light and you love my dark You dig everything of which I'm ashamed There's not anything to which you can't relate And you're still here
What I resist, persists, and speaks louder than I know What I resist, you love, no matter how low or high I go
I'm the funniest woman that you've ever known I'm the dullest woman that you've ever known I'm the most gorgeous woman that you've ever known And you've never met anyone Who is as everything as I am sometimes
You see everything (you see everything), you see every part (you see every part ) You see all my light (you see all my light) and you love my dark (and you love my dark ) You dig everything (you dig everything) of which I'm ashamed (of which I'm ashamed) There's not anything (there's not anything) to which you can't relate (to which you can't relate) And you're still here

Love that song, Nick. I love the opposites, negative and positive, funny and dull. And when listening to those thingss I recognize all those features in myself. When performing the song she dedicates it to all the complicated people in the audience. Cute. There are a lot of lyrics I like and hold dear. My favorite Vanessa song is Pourtant. I think the lyrics are so beautiful. I'll post the translation here, and highlighted my favorite part. Original Lyrics Pourtant English Translation Nevertheless You asked yesterday My opinion of happiness Without looking like it now you worry Peace seems to frighten you I am firing up (teasing) this love The twigs flutter You are dazzled It's my secret life Nevertheless... Nevertheless... Nevertheless... The words are, the words do, the words say The words flow, the words roll on a string Me, I leave these microbes, these missiles For the talkative*, for the poets if possible Oh... I love you so when you explain yourself It's funny but... I put the fashions and the recipes away Put the box on fire, my heart This little sacrifice stays for me A dizziness, a warmth (heat) I am firering up (teasing) this love The twigs flutter You are dazzled It's my secret life Nevertheless... Nevertheless... Nevertheless... You know, you asked me yesterday My vision of happiness Eh well, each day it's clearer to me It won't frighten us anymore I am firering up (teasing) this love The twigs flutter You are dazzled It's my secret life Nevertheless... Nevertheless... Nevertheless...

U2 - With or Without YouSee the stone set in your eyes See the thorn twist in your side. I wait for you. Sleight of hand and twist of fate On a bed of nails she makes me wait And I wait without you
With or without you With or without you.
Through the storm, we reach the shore You gave it all but I want more And I'm waiting for you
With or without you With or without you. I can't live with or without you.
And you give yourself away And you give yourself away And you give, and you give And you give yourself away.
My hands are tied, my body bruised She´s got me with nothing to win And nothing left to lose.
And you give yourself away And you give yourself away And you give, and you give And you give yourself away.
With or without you With or without you I can't live With or without you.
With or without you With or without you I can't live With or without you With or without you. U2 - I still haven't found what I'm looking forI have climbed highest mountains I have run through the fields Only to be with you Only to be with you I have run I have crawled I have scaled these city walls These city walls Only to be with you
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
I have kissed honey lips Felt the healing in her fingertips It burned like a fire This burning desire
I have spoke with the tongue of angels I have held the hand of a devil It was warm in the night I was cold as a stone
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
I believe in the Kingdom Come Then all the colors will bleed into one Bleed into one But yes I'm still running
You broke the bonds And you loosed the chains Carried the cross Of my shame Oh my shame You know I believe it
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for But I still haven't found what I'm looking for But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
Both are pure poetry, both about ever-lasting insatisfation. I'd highlight all of it, actually.

These are also great lines:
I was speeding on the subway Through the stations of the cross Every eye looking every other way Counting down ’til the pain would stop
from Moment of Surrender-U2
The same song again:
I’ve been in every black hole At the altar of the dark star My body’s now a begging bowl That’s begging to get back, begging to get back To my heart

If we're taking U2 lyrics. I think this is the most beautiful song. One of the best they have written.
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
Tough, you think you've got the stuff You're telling me and anyone You're hard enough
You don't have to put up a fight You don't have to always be right Let me take some of the punches For you tonight
Listen to me now I need to let you know You don't have to go it alone
And it's you when I look in the mirror And it's you when I don't pick up the phone Sometimes you can't make it on your own
We fight all the time You and I...that's alright We're the same soul I don't need...I don't need to hear you say That if we weren't so alike You'd like me a whole lot more
Listen to me now I need to let you know You don't have to go it alone
And it's you when I look in the mirror And it's you when I don't pick up the phone Sometimes you can't make it on your own
I know that we don't talk I'm sick of it all Can - you - hear - me - when - I - Sing, you're the reason I sing You're the reason why the opera is in me...
Where are we now? I've got to let you know A house still doesn't make a home Don't leave me here alone...
And it's you when I look in the mirror And it's you that makes it hard to let go Sometimes you can't make it on your own Sometimes you can't make it The best you can do is to fake it Sometimes you can't make it on your own

It's no coincidence my favourite songs are always so depressive and melancholic... This is to mother you by Sinéad O'Connor
This is to mother you To comfort you and get you through Through when your nights are lonely Through when your dreams are only blue This is to mother you This is to be with you To hold you and to kiss you too For when you need me I will do What your own mother didn't do Which is to mother you All the pain that you have known All the violence in your soul All the 'wrong' things you have done I will take from you when I am come All mistakes made in distress All your unhappiness I will take away with my kiss, yes I will give you tenderness For child I am so glad I've found you Although my arms have always been around you Sweet bird although you did not see me I saw you And I'm here to mother you To comfort you and get you through Through when your nights are lonely Through when your dreams are only blue This is to mother you
Father and Son by Cat Stevens
Father It's not time to make a change, Just relax, take it easy. You're still young, that's your fault, There's so much you have to know. Find a girl, settle down, If you want you can marry. Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.
I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy, To be calm when you've found something going on. But take your time, think a lot, Why, think of everything you've got. For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.
Son How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again. It's always been the same, same old story. From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen. Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away. I know I have to go.
Father It's not time to make a change, Just sit down, take it slowly. You're still young, that's your fault, There's so much you have to go through. Find a girl, settle down, if you want you can marry. Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy. (Son-- Away Away Away, I know I have to Make this decision alone - no) Son All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside, It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it. If they were right, I'd agree, but it's them They know not me. Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away. I know I have to go. (Father-- Stay Stay Stay, Why must you go and make this decision alone?)

The second lyrics are so true! So true that I don't quite know what to say. The song just perfectly captures the way things are in relationships between parents ans children.

The glory of Alanis Morissette as a songwriter: Thank you (...) how bout me not blaming you for everything how bout me enjoying the moment for once how bout how good it feels to finally forgive you how bout grieving it all one at a time (...) the moment I let go of it was the moment I got more than I could handle the moment I jumped off of it was the moment I touched down
That I would be good that I would be good even if I did nothing that I would be good even if I got the thumbs down that I would be good if I got and stayed sick that I would be good even if I gained ten pounds
that I would be fine even if I went bankrupt that I would be good if I lost my hair and my youth that I would be great if I was no longer queen that I would be grand if I was not all knowing
that I would be loved even when I numb myself that I would be good even when I am overwhelmed that I would be loved even when I was fuming that I would be good even if I was clingy
that I would be good even if I lost sanity that I would be good whether with or without you
